We must now have a higher regard for the unknown. The pandemic is the most recent example of a “black swan” event: something so rare that people have forgotten it may happen. To be agile enough to survive and prosper through these situations, whatever they may be, we must rely on general preparedness rather than precise planning. We need to do more what-if thinking, estimate potential errors, and talk about risk (what might happen, backed up with analysis). 

The daily push-and-pull of negotiation and influence will ensure constant information and assistance, as unanticipated challenges and dangers are immediately brought to the surface and controlled. There is a conflict between the necessity to run effectively and the need to innovate for our products and services to remain relevant to client demands and desires.

Because of the difficulty of interacting remotely with contractors or vendors and the need to assert greater control over things that directly affect revenue generation, businesses will choose to source critical applications and processes internally, and project managers will play a more important role internally.

What Project Management Expectations Will Businesses Have?

The obstacles that project managers will confront will be the same as those they experienced with their customers and end-users prior to COVID – just in greater numbers.

Clients prefer a one-time fix: ‘tell me what to do.’ They want to acquire readymade solutions that meet business needs and function straight away. However, due to the rapid speed of change, what they demand now may not be what they require on the day they take delivery.

Clients want a new mindset: ‘I need you to tell me how to think and solve problems.’ Clients must be a member of the solution team so that if their demands change, they can convey those changes to the project team and learn what options are available.

What unique challenges will project managers face as businesses resume “business as usual”?

Businesses are beginning to recognize the importance of skills for company resilience. What worked yesterday may not work today. “We need to find things out once and then move on,” is the fully human answer. That, however, is the incorrect response. Because problems develop, they necessitate a dynamic problem-solving and solution-delivery process.

Businesses are also gradually realizing the need for hiring for problem-solving rather than a pure “hire-for-skill” strategy. Having the technical capabilities to accomplish the job is essential, but organizations also want employees with problem-solving abilities that allow them to discover the best solutions when needs change.
